I sang/rapped along with all of Alligator Sky by Owl City (see below). I got all the words out in the correct order and (mostly) at the right time.
No, please don't ask me to do it again. See, my sense of rhythm is about as bad as a blind folded child's sense of direction after being spun around and handed something sharp. I'm as liable to poke someone's eye out as I am to stay in time with a piece of music.
Add to that the fact that I am entirely tone deaf and you have a musical disaster for a human being. And you know what? I am okay with that.
See, if I wasn't such a musical disaster I would have to try to sing Tacky's singing parts in the Tacky the Penguin book. I wouldn't be Tacky then, I'd be purposefully trying to sing poorly to get his songs exactly right.
Instead, I can sing Tacky's songs any day, any time, any where and they always come out sounding like Tacky sang them. It's great.
If you have never read the Tacky the Penguin books then you are sorely missing out. Here's the link to order it: Tacky the Penguin on Amazon. Please, stop reading my blog, order this book, and then forgive your parents for not reading it to you when you were a child.
Yet I think there's more here to explore. If God can allow my lack of musical ability to have a hidden strength that goes with it...can't He do that with all my weaknesses? Can't He reveal His glory through my weaknesses in that way?
Sure, I could be upset with God for not making me musically talented. I will never get to sing a beautiful love song to my future wife. But, I can read some of the best children's books to my future children and always, always nail the singing part dead on. That's worth being thankful for.
So today, as you try to rap along to Alligator Sky, just remember that if you can't rap it's not the end of the world. Instead, look for ways that your weakness there could be a strength. God is always good and He is good in all ways. It's up to us to seek that out when we don't see it right away.
