I want to share just such a story with you tonight. Mostly because I'm so excited by it that I can't sleep yet.
Today I had planned to go over to a friend's house for dinner. I get a text from them early afternoon saying that they needed to cancel because their kitchen flooded. Needless to say having the heat out in my office while it was snowing outside seemed like way less of a problem than it was before.
When I got off of work I called my friend to see if there was anything I could do to help. I'm not plumber but I'm fairly handy with a mop and bucket. The good news was that the damage was way less than they anticipated and we could still do something.
Here's where the incredible timing comes in - I had bought stuff to make dinner with them already. So instead of making it at their house and arriving early I did most of the prep work at my place and arrived later. While I'm nothing incredible in the kitchen, there's something about a home cooked meal that is just comforting. Through our plans, God provided a small bit of comfort for my friend and their family after their kitchen flooded - a hot meal, simple dessert, and laughter instead of pizza (nothing against pizza but it doesn't compare to home cooked food).
Is bringing my friend a meal anything that grand in the big scheme of life? Not really. Other than the leftovers and dirty dishes, there's no physical record of that meal. And both of those are fleeting at best. But in my heart there's joy that God allowed me to serve a friend, awe that God prepared me to have everything ready when it was needed, and wonder at the beauty of laughter and friendship. Everything God does is divine, even in the mundane aspects of day to day life.
What ways have you seen Him working recently?
